POSITION SUMMARY : The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture on outpatients.
REPORTS TO : The Phlebotomist reports to the Lab Tech Supervisor. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products. Follows safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures. Performs venipuncture on patients. Runs Thyroid tests, sets up and runs urine tests, CBCs, Strep, Mono, and H. Pylori testing. Documents patients both in the computer and on paper on a daily basis. Assists donor before, during and after donation. Inventories supplies and places orders. Learns DX and CPT codes and applies the codes to the appropriate tests. Prepares fee slips for all patient draws scheduled for the following business day. Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other staff as well as with other labs. Finishes all tasks in a timely manner and by the end of each business day. Pays close attention to all pertinent information and fills out appropriate slips. Documents values of importance daily. Works efficiently and understands patient flow. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED. CNA or Phlebotomy certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : He/she must have knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and clinic protocols and policies; must be skillful in efficient and effectives draws. He/she must possess skills in customer service principles; must possess the ability to communicate clearly in person and on the phone; must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English. He/she must be able to respond appropriately to instructions and demonstrate professionalism at all times; must recognize, understand, and observe patient confidentiality in strict accordance with HIPAA. He/she must maintain a high degree of integrity, loyalty, and honesty and not divulge to outside parties any information of a confidential nature pertaining to clinic operations. He/she must be able and willing to learn and perform other skills and tasks as requested or required. He/she must apply written instructions and standardized work practices and organize and prioritize tasks sufficiently. He/she must establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, patients, and families; must demonstrate the ability to successfully cope with stress related to work load and/or working with tense patients. He/she must be a self-starter and able to work without direct supervision; must be punctual and maintain a professional appearance. He/she may be exposed to communicable diseases; must be able to walk to various settings and to bend and reach. He/she may be exposed to sharp instruments, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals. He/she must; must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies and equipment. |
