Combining excellence in diagnostic medicine with a long tradition of family care

Are You At Risk of Osteoporosis?
Normal bone is dense and strong. Bone with osteoporosis has thinned and become porous, making it more likely to break.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density testing for all women over 65, and for all women after menopause who have one or more of these risk factors:

  • Caucasian or Asian race
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Low body weight (<127 lbs)
  • Women who are small-boned
  • Estrogen deficiency/early menopause (before age 45)
  • Too much alcohol or caffeine
  • Too little exercise
  • Too little calcium or vitamin D
  • Recurrent falls
  • Certain medications, such as steroids and thyroid hormone
  • A previous broken bone as an adult, resulting from a minor injury
  • A family history of osteoporosis, or a hip fracture in a first-degree relative

What Is a Bone Density Test?
A bone density test is a simple and painless way to help your doctor assess the health of your bones. It may also be used to monitor your rate of bone loss and response to therapy.

The MAY Clinics Bone Density Department offers bone density scanning, supervised by a team of Certified Clinical Densitometrists.

Ask your doctor if a bone density test is right for you.
